Each week, the competitors are given lip-synching matches to battle out who the best ‘Drag Queen’ is among the rest.

RuPaul Andrei Charles, who was named after the show, acts as the host, head judge, and mentor throughout the series.

Season 1 Winner: BeBe Zahara Benet

Real Name: Nea Marshall Kudi Ngwa

Year: 2009

After participating in the inaugural season of the show, she has been crowned the first “America’s Next Drag Superstar” after defeating her fellow contestants to become the first drag race contestant to win the show (in drag race history, as Ru would say!).

BeBe was invited to return to ‘All-Stars 3’ before 2018. Despite her reservations about returning to the show, she accepted the invitation and was introduced to the show’s now-massive audience.

BeBe and her competitor Shangela made it to the last episode and finished third/4th overall.

“Being BeBe,” a feature-length documentary on Zahara, has been in the works since 2006.

The documentary chronicled her path from her early days in Minneapolis to winning Season 1, through her inner challenges, and finally participating in ‘All Stars 3’.

BeBe was barely a month old at the Gay 90’s club when filmmaker Emily Branham met her.

BeBe Zahara Benet is currently based in Minneapolis. Here, she continues to tour the world and produce her shows and performances, all influenced by her African culture and fame in a drag race.

Season 2 Winner: Tyra Sanchez

Real Name: James William Ross IV

Year: 2010

Tyra Sanchez is a drag performer and make-up artist who won Season 2 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Sanchez earned the titles The ‘Other Tyra’ and The ‘New Tyra’ during his stint on Drag Race. He spoke openly about his homelessness and personal problems before competing in the show.

Despite his acerbic nature, Tyra’s elegant old-school drag-style made him a favorite of the judges, which garnered him the scorn of his fellow contenders.

Tyra started on social media back in 2020 when he was leaving RuPaul’s Drag Race.

He’s also saying goodbye to his alter ego, Tyra Sanchez. Instead, he prefers to be addressed as James Ross, using He/Him pronouns, which some drag race fans will be upset about.

Season 3 Winner: Raja Gemini

Real Name: Sutan Ibrahim Karim Amrullah

Raja Gemini, also known as Raja, is the stage name of Sutan Amrull, a drag queen, make-up artist, and model best known for her participation in the reality TV show ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and as the Season 3 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race;

During the competition, Raja quickly drew attention with her high fashion looks and signature catwalk.

Raja has a drag daughter named Rhea Litré with Season 10’s Mayhem Miller. ‘

She has been adopting several drag children since winning Season 3 of Ru Paul’s drag race, including Anderson Brooks, Thierry Meissel, Illuminati Princess, and Bionka Simone.

Season 4 Winner: Sharon Needles

Year: 2012

Sharon Needles is a drag queen, performer, and music artist who won RuPaul’s Drag Race season 4 back in 2012.

Throughout the season, Sharon won drag race fans and judges over with her eerie aesthetic, quick wit, and humble demeanor.

She surprised the judges with her runway performances week after week, eventually finishing in the Top 3 alongside Phi Phi O’Hara and Chad Michaels.

Sharon Needles was crowned the 4th “America’s Next Drag Superstar” at the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 4 “Reunion” special on April 30, 2012.

The three performed in the music video for RuPaul’s song “Glamazon.”

After the show’s events, Needles had a long-term romance with Alaska, a fellow drag queen.

Despite her breakup with Alaska, she was engaged to Chad O’Connell, an SFX make-up artist, last July 2020.

Season 5 Winner: Jinkx Monsoon

Real Name: Jerick Hoffer

Year: 2013

Jinkx Monsoon is a performer, actor, and musician who won season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Jinkx Monsoon was named one of 14 drag queens competing on the fifth season of the show back in November 2012.

After seeing Sharon Needles on Season 4, she decided to audition. Monsoon won the primary roles for the episodes “Drama Queens” and “Snatch Game,” mimicking Edith Bouvier Beale, most known for her role in the documentary “Grey Gardens.”

Monsoon also participated in theater acting with Richard Andriessen, a.k.a. Major Scales, in the musical “The Vaudevillians,” a 1920s revival performance.

They performed at the Laurie Beechman Theater on Broadway in New York City after winning season 5.

Recently, Jinkx began her musical career and has become a voice actor for the character Emerald in the hit show “Steven Universe.”

Like a drag race winner, Jinx is one of the biggest underdogs in drag race history to win the drag race franchise.

Season 6 Winner: Bianca Del Rio

Real Name: Roy Rene Haylock

Year: 2014

Bianca Del Rio is widely regarded as the best of the winners in the show’s history. She is among the drag race legends, a fan favorite throughout and after her season.

After winning her season, Bianca Del Rio began touring as a solo performer and appeared in shows with other former competitors.

She starred in the films “Hurricane Bianca” and “Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia with Hate,” as well as wrote a book titled “Blame It On Bianca” and released a make-up remover called “The Bianca Remover.”

Season 7 – Violet Chachki

Come through! Violet Chachki was a fashion queen through and through, and made no apologies about it throughout season 7 — wowing from the very first challenge with her reversible tartan bodysuit reveal. Though she had some stumbles in the acting and comedy challenges and took a while to show her personality in the work room, she delivered innovative, gag-worthy looks week after week and was always cinched for the gods.

(Remember when she snatched Ariana Grande’s ponytail clean off her head?) By the time the finale rolled around, the race was Violet’s to lose. And thank goodness she didn’t — especially because of her memorable stunning hand-off look at the next year’s season 8 finale.

Season 8 – Bob the Drag Queen

Bob walked into her season bag first, and never looked back. A comedy queen who slew every acting challenge and always brought her own sickening flair to the runways, season 8 was Bob’s from the jump, and she knew it.

Somehow that confidence was never off-putting — it was just too much fun watching her drop improv gems in “Chocolate Chip Cookie’s” stunningly-stoned jumpsuit, channel both Uzo Aduba and Carol Channing in the “Snatch Game” and campaign for president opposite Derrick Barry.

Bob might not like to show off (yeah, right), but when she beat out fan-favorite queens Kim Chi and Naomi Smalls in the season 8 finale, it was clear she’d earned every bragging right.

Season 9 – Sasha Velour

Artistic queen Sasha Velour entered the werk room with a crown and a scream. She closed out season 9’s competition with a scepter in her hand and the crowd in awe.

After sticking to her eclectic, original style to deliver impressive looks throughout the season’s runways, Sasha and her fellow finalists were shocked in the finale by the ru-veal of the now-standard “Lip Sync Showdown” for the crown.

She took out a friend and fellow front-runner Shea Coulee in the first round — giving birth to a truly iconic Drag Race moment with her rose petal wig snatch — and called back Valentina’s face mask fiasco in the final round, defeating Peppermint to “change sh*t up” as America’s Next Drag Superstar.

Season 10 – Aquaria

Season 10 was pretty much-packed top to bottom with iconic queens, but Aquaria stood out from the very beginning. Whether it was her cool confidence, her incredibly savvy and distinct runway styles — perhaps the best the show has seen to date — or the fact that she was 21 years old, there was something special about the b*tch from New York City.

She never even had to lip-sync until the finale, where she bested runners-up, Kameron Michaels and Eureka O’Hara, turning looks and stunting pretty all the way to the crown.

Season 11 – Yvie Oddly

Drag Race got weird once again in season 11, when eclectic queen Yvie Oddly rolled in as the first-ever competing queen from Denver, Colorado. Yvie’s unique fashions placed her at the top of the competition nearly every week, but it wasn’t until her unforgettable “Sorry Not Sorry” lip-sync against Brooke Lynn Hytes (which culminated in an indisputable double save) that Drag Race fans knew something truly special was happening — and it wasn’t just that insane laugh.

When the finale’s lip-sync tournament came down to those two queens once again, the whole theater went wild as they took us to the “Edge of Glory.” It was a close race to the finish, but ultimately, Yvie’s back bending in that stunning mirrored headpiece cemented her status as America’s Next Drag Superstar, and she left us with a reminder to “embrace your oddities and let your freak flag fly!”

Season 12 – Jaida Essence Hall

The 32-year-old pageant queen proved to be the essence of beauty and so much more in Drag Race’s strongest season yet, winning the quarantine crown during the virtual finale with a total of three maxi challenge wins including the all-important superfan makeover.

Having previously auditioned for season 7 alongside fellow Milwaukee queen Trixie Mattel, Jaida opened up to ET’s Brice Sander about what the win means to her.

“It does not matter where you come from, what your background is, how long you’ve been working at things and how many things you failed at, you can achieve anything,” she said. “Success is so many different things to a lot of people. And I still found a way to find success in my life just by pursuing my happiness and my dreams.”

Season 13 – Symone

Drag Race season 13 took place at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and an unprecedented season deserved a winner like no other! Symone started her season with three big wins in a row — including the gauntlet-style “Lip Sync for Your Life” tournament in the season premiere — and her star never really faded.

Season 13 culminated in a socially-distanced, outdoor runway finale, where the House of Avalon stunner turned in some of the most jaw-dropping looks the show has ever seen in order to clinch the crown in supreme fashion.

Season 14 – Willow Pill

Following a nerve-wracking double shantay in season 14’s penultimate episode, Willow Pill was just the right medicine for the finale, taking home the bejeweled scepter as the newest reigning queen.

However, the newly-crowned winner did take a moment to reflect on the tough competition in season 14, joking in her speech, “I just really wanna thank my family, and my friends, and most of all, I need to thank Kornbread’s ankle.”
